By the time you book a breast implant consultation, you may already have an idea of how you would like your breasts to look. The consultation is an opportunity to find out how that preference fits with what may realistically suit your existing anatomy.

Asking questions allows you to understand why certain options are being recommended and how much flexibility there may be within what is suitable for you. This can be especially useful if the surgeon’s recommendation differs from what you initially had in mind.

You do not need to arrive knowing exactly which implant or surgical approach you want.

Questions About Your Implant Recommendation

More than one approach may sometimes be possible. Asking how the recommendation was reached can help you understand which decisions are open to discussion and why certain alternatives may be less appropriate.

Are Breast Implants Suitable for the Change I Want?

Start by explaining what you would like to change about your breasts.

Ask whether implants alone are likely to achieve that change and whether there are aspects they may not address. If your surgeon suggests combining implants with a breast lift or considering another procedure instead, ask what that approach would achieve that implants alone may not.

Why Do You Recommend This Implant for Me?

Once implants are considered suitable, ask why one implant is being recommended over another.

Ask how the proposed implant dimensions were chosen. Two implants with the same volume can still have different dimensions, so the same volume does not necessarily create the same result.

If you have already researched different implant options, you can use what you have found as a starting point for questions. Your surgeon can then explain why those options may or may not suit your anatomy.

If you prefer a larger or smaller option, ask how that could affect the expected appearance and whether it would still be appropriate for you. You can also ask what distinguishes the recommended implant from the alternatives and request the manufacturer’s patient information if you would like to review it yourself.

How Will the Implant Be Positioned and Where Will the Scar Be?

Implants can be positioned over the chest muscle, beneath it or using a dual-plane approach. With a dual-plane approach, the upper part of the implant sits beneath the chest muscle while the lower part sits beneath the breast tissue.

Ask which approach your surgeon recommends and why it is suitable for the procedure being planned.

This is also a good time to ask where the incision will be made and where the resulting scar is expected to sit. If more than one approach could be used, ask how the options differ and why one has been recommended over another.

Questions About Surgical Risks and Recovery

A recommendation may sound suitable, but you also need to know what proceeding with surgery could involve in practice.

Which Risks and Warning Signs Should I Understand?

Ask your surgeon to explain the common risks of surgery as well as those that relate specifically to breast implants. These may include:

  • General surgical risks: Bleeding, infection and changes in breast or nipple sensation.
  • Implant-related complications: These can include implant movement, rippling or rupture. Capsular contracture can also occur when the scar tissue around an implant tightens and changes how the breast feels or looks.
  • BIA-ALCL: This uncommon form of lymphoma has been associated more often with certain textured breast implants. Ask whether this risk is relevant to the implant being considered.

Also ask which changes during recovery are expected and which should prompt medical review. Knowing this beforehand can make it easier to recognise when something falls outside the usual healing process.

What Support Will I Need After Surgery?

Ask what level of help you may need at home during the early recovery period.

If you care for young children or manage most day-to-day responsibilities at home, ask what support may be useful while you are recovering.

When Can I Return to My Usual Activities?

Recovery advice should reflect what you actually do from day to day. Someone working at a desk may have different requirements from someone whose job involves physical activity.

Ask when you may be able to return to work and resume the activities that are part of your usual routine. During the recovery process after breast implant surgery, the breasts can continue settling even after you feel comfortable returning to many everyday activities.

It can therefore also be useful to ask when the result is expected to look more settled and when your surgeon would assess the longer-term outcome.

Questions About Long-Term Care and Costs

Some questions matter even if they will not affect the operation itself. Raising them beforehand can give you a fuller picture of what choosing breast implants may involve over time.

Could My Implants Need to Be Replaced in the Future?

Breast implants do not have one fixed replacement date that applies to every patient. Some people may have their implants for many years without needing another operation, while others may consider further surgery because of a change involving the implant or breast.

Ask what circumstances could make removal or replacement advisable and what changes you should be aware of over time.

What Follow-Up Will I Need Over Time?

Ask what type of follow-up is usually recommended for the implant being considered and whether imaging may be advised in the future.

Follow-up recommendations can depend on the implant selected. Ask whether any future imaging is recommended for your implant and when it may be considered.

You can also ask whether having implants affects routine breast screening and which implant records you should keep for future reference.

What Does the Quoted Fee Include?

Ask what is included in the quoted fee so you can understand which costs are covered before deciding whether to proceed.

Ask whether routine follow-up appointments are included and whether future imaging or additional treatment would carry separate charges.

FAQs About Breast Implant Consultations

Are reference photos useful during a breast implant consultation?

Yes. Reference photos can help communicate the type of result you have in mind. They are best treated as a communication tool rather than an exact template, since the same result may not be achievable for every patient.

Can I use a bra cup size to explain the result I want?

You can mention a preferred cup size, but bra sizing varies between brands and styles, so it may not describe your goal precisely. It can be more useful to explain how you would like your breasts to look in proportion to your body.

Do I need to decide on an implant during my first consultation?

Not necessarily. The consultation is an opportunity to understand the options being considered and ask questions about the recommendation. If you are not ready to decide, you can take time to consider the information provided before confirming whether you want to proceed.
